Set in the ever changing nation of Afghanistan, A Thousand Marvelous Suns is a novel under the sad lives of two Afghan women in whose fates strangely intertwine toward the middle of the detailed story. They reside in a time that ranges through the Soviet Attack to the rule of the Taliban to the post-Taliban rebuilding stage when all their stories end. The first section of the book follows the life of Mariam, which begins with her agonizing childhood. As an illegitimate kid of a well-to-do cinema owner and his maid, her mother, she lives her days in a filthy shack with her scornful mother. Weekly visits by her dad keep Mariam happy till one day this individual doesn't show up.
